Leading the way to a sustainable future
By publishing sustainably, we can reduce the environmental impact we have producing books for today’s readers whilst ensuring the Earth’s future for tomorrows’.
By publishing sustainably, we can reduce the environmental impact we have producing books for today’s readers whilst ensuring the Earth’s future for tomorrows’.
To ensure we reach our environmental targets, we’ve developed 6 key principles that are guiding our approach to sustainability. Where we can, we aim to:
Source all our paper and materials with a focus on sustainability.
Reduce our carbon footprint across all aspects of the business and work towards achieving net zero status.
Review our working practices on a regular basis to ensure we’re reaching our sustainability targets.
Collaborate with our colleagues across the supply chain as well as the industry to create positive change.
Amplify the climate emergency, both internally through employee correspondence and externally through our publishing programme.
Improve our work continuously and incrementally.
Keep up-to-date with everything going on at the Ulverscroft Group.
Deforestation, excessive waste, and carbon emissions are amongst the major threats to our climate and all three can be linked to the publication of a book.
To counter this, we’re working hard to use materials with the lowest environmental impact including ensuring 100% of the paper we use to make our books is Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) certified, 100% recyclable cases for our physical audiobooks and from January 2024, a sustainable, plant-based, and renewable carbon neutral alternative to plastic coverings.
By working as an industry, we believe publishers can facilitate change and work towards a better future.
We are a part of the Book Industry Communications (BIC) Green Supply Chain Committee. The committee is intended to serve as a strategic, central point for senior representatives from key book industry stakeholders to address environmental matters with specific regards to the supply chain.
We are also a signatory of the Publishers Association’s Publishing Declares pledge, the industry’s first major collective declaration on climate action.
Our publishing policies have always been based around promoting the biggest and best stories – and with the climate crisis being the biggest story any of us has ever faced, we want to make sure it has a happy ending.
We are committed to promoting climate conscious ideas, by publishing fiction and non-fiction with environmental themes as well as exploring and embracing the environmental benefits of digital publishing, through our digital library platform, uLibrary.
